Hongti Art Center. Busan. South Korea
Sway. Shift: Busan Version, is a large-scale, immersive video installation for a solo exhibition as part of an artist residency at Hongti Art Center in South Korea. The installation combines plastic forms, video projection and light into an imagined, futuristic, shifting landscape. Brightly colored plastic market baskets, culled from the local (and famous) Jagalchi outdoor seafood market, are stretched with scrim fabric and arranged vertically.
These ubiquitous market baskets, emblematic of the spirit of Busan, cast ephemeral mandalas when light passes through them creating contemplative, meditative spaces. Combined with underwater seaweed video footage, disparate elements intersect to evoke ancient rituals and cycles of food growth, preparation and consumption.
